We're looking at doing an updateable site for a client but have limited tech skills.
Has anyone tried off the shelf content management software such as this:

Please could someone let me know the possible ups and downs of using such a system, and what a bespoke system would give you over it.
Thank you!

hire someone with skills.
I do so when nescessary....it would make him/her happy to earn a bit as well.
think about it.

Contribute won't allow different things to update automatically across a site, eg if I add a news story it can't automatically update the news headlines list that links to the story...
I'm looking for something that will update different areas across the site automatically.

Then I would hire someone, just thought you were looking for something simple...

4cy... But what is the problem with the off the shelf stuff? Maybe I'm being clueless but I 'm just trying to find out why you would pay a guy do to a brand new content management system when you can buy one off the shelf?

you could always partner with a CMS provider, there's loads of free PHP ones out there...I think

foz4... I guess we are looking for something reasonably simple, just a middle ground between Contribute and the big spend on technical input.
- foz40
I meant or you could partner...blah blah
- timA0
foz4, do you have any links to any PHP CMS providers, just to point me in the right direction?
- foz40
Tim, what do you need to do, just update news pages, do you need an uploader for the client?
- foz40
Try PHP NUKE, I think that might do the trick

Thanks foz4... I guess I'm just trying to gauge what can be done with a simple, inexpensive method.
It would likely just be several sections across the site that are updateable, with updateable news headline areas and things.

Try this http://www.phpnuke.org

Thanks foz4, I'll check that out...

we just bought paperthin's commonspot software for our organization.
20k for the initial purchase, with approx 10k add-ons and training.
but a great product.

i'll post the final version when it's done. (probably 2-3 weeks off)

Thanks xrusos... Your package is 20k, the one I'm looking at is $300... Just trying to figure out whether there is a cheap solution. Anyone tried a budget content management system...

as a database/programming guy, i've always favored homegrown management systems...when all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail, i guess.

I'm (still) looking for a reasonably priced CMS for an online magazine...but it's got to do a lot of things...and every system we've seen would require so much customization to suit our news channels and archiving, multiple authors, photo galleries , company 'yellow pages' n stuff, that we're gradually coming to the conclusion that the best way is to have it all done from scratch in PHP/MySQL... unless anyone knows of another good, modular, expandable system...
