What's the deal with the Helvetica font? it's licenced to apple and adobe but if i'm on a PC and using Flash or Quark, I have to buy it?

Or just use Arial.
From what I've read, Microsoft pretty much ripped Arial from Helvetica almost perfectly, geometry-wise.

Actually, the reverse is true. Arial is a rip off of Helvetica just like pc is a rip off of mac.

C'mon it's not a ripoff. Take a look at the beautifully chiseled helvetica "R". You can't find that magic twitch in your everyday Arial!

I don't think the general public says to themselves: "Good, whomever made this site, used Helvetica." , "Eeew, this person used Arial!" Really, the only folks who care are the designers. When I'm told anything from a clients, all they say is sans-serif, and they don't know jack-shit about the difference between Helvetica and Arial. It's horrible how we obsess over such things. No wonder artists succumb to mental illness at higher rates to their bean-counting counterparts.
