Taking my wife up there this weekend. We live in the central valley.
Any suggestions on what to see? We want to do some cross country skiing, any suggestion on which site?
Also which road to take? 50 or 80?

Hwy 50 for south shore, 80 for north shore. You might need chains. Dunno much about cross country skiing, but I'm sure there's plenty of snow up there. I need to make a trip up to go snowboarding.

If you go to the North Shore (Route 80) there isn't much else to do but go skiiing, but there are plenty of resorts (Northstar, Sugarbowl, Borreal, Sqauw Valley, Alpine Meadows).
If you go to the South Shore (route 50) You pretty much go to Heavenly or find your way to Kirkwood. The advantage of south lake is that you are right on the border of Nevada so there are casinos etc. and plenty to do when you're not skiiing.
I'm a snowboarder, and not a big gambler so I prefer North Shore because of the choice in resorts. If I get bored I usually drive to Reno.
If you go South Shore, Heavenly seems like the best bet for skiiers. It's huge, has the tallest summit and the largest terrain and I'm pretty sure they have trails for x-country.

Either way, have fun!!
