i love the work of Gaudi, a man & architecture ahead of his time. When in Barcelona, i was dazzled by the beauty and contemporanety of its work.
And I must say, sincerely it is more daring, interesting and focused than the (average) projects presented by great names like Libeskind, Eisenmann, Holl and Foster. With the exception of Unstudio.

Sorry, but that Guadi design is weak. There is a reason why it's never been built, let's not start now. The new World Trade Center should be an original design for that specfic site. Not some off the shelf design surreal design.

actually I like it in that it gives OLD NY a new spicing up

I, too, love Gaudi and have visited many of his works. He created an organic, yet still dynamic, vocabularly that was unique and timeless. That does not mean that people should start regurgetating their 'interpretations' of his sketches or work. That's disgusting and inappropriate.
Sagrada Familia, one of his best in Barcelona, is a truly wonderful building that must be experienced. It would be a shame for anyone to taint his legacy with this crap.
If this thing were ever built, there would be a mass suicide in the architectural community (myself included)!!
Ugh!!

I took art history and architecture elective classes, like most of you guys, and I do respect Gaudi, and a host of others, especially that French designer who forsaw freeways and highways with the highrises before structural engineering even caught up technologically.
And I do like the building. But you see, the lay-folk out there are just that, regular people. When they look at that building, they simply aren't saying "Oooohh, man! He used some nice ships curves on that!" or "The shape is poetic, it has INERTIA" or "What would the Russian Constructivists say?" or "Phillipe Starck would love it, so would Luigi Colani..."
Nooo. They're saying "Looks like a spaceship" (I said the same thing, I am a man for the people) or "Looks like a cock".
They're not disrespecting Gaudi, They're celebrating their freedom of speech, and voicing their visceral reaction to a building that's atypical compared to every other building around it.
Oh they should totally go for it.

sweet. we need some different looking structures in the middle of all our monolithic cities.
*although, i sort of despise the EMP here in seattle...

I love Gaudi in every single aspect, but, I really dont think anyone would be able to have the preception about architecture and art, therefore, I dont think people should just go building things he designed, only because they are not going to be GAUDIs, but someoneelses taste and points of view.
I ersonally think it wuold be a lack of respect for his work to go thinking anyone who is an architect could ever see things the way he did (which doesnt mean I think other architects are not open minded or whatever you want to call it). Im an architect myself, but because i love Gaudis work so much and because I respect him and his work, I would never agree to build one of his designs. But,again, that's just me

Either that rendering is really bad, or the original concept was. I don't like anything retro modern as far as architecture goes. It wears real thin real quick.
Keep your eyes foreward.

It's exactly the reason that we should not build anything that is a reactionary blurb, like "ooh, looks like a space ship", from the lay person. It would create a world of superficial nonsense, that would wear thin on the second glance.
Thankfully, there are visionaries, educated architects, etc., that make many of the most important decisions. Just as with law, medicine, even web design, we need those that are part of the profession, those with knowledge and experience, to guide the rest of the world.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case, as proven by all the bs mediterranean crap sprawled across America, etc., etc.
Education is the key, not 'what the people want'. The people want what the are told to want by television, by advertisements, not by intellectual contemplation or understanding. But that's not to say something can't 'look good', it just needs to be more than skin deep.

I agree mbr. I remember when the Guggenheim was built, people went nuts, the locals, not in a good way. Or that Japanese Building that Phiilipe Starck graced with some organic "turd"
on the roof. One of those realised designs that make you say "What (the hell) happened?"

wow. Now that someone mentioned that there would be suicides in the architectural world if this thing ever got built Im really starting to like it! I hope it goes up. Dont forget that Gaudi was pretty much ignored during decades by mainly, the architectural community for being "crazy". when he was an old man he wasnt even that respected, everyone was embracing the bauhaus and other currents while he didnt care and kept on doing his thing.

if it's either this or one of the proposals... then i choose Gaudi. The proposals suck sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... much!

why not make it a rocket ship so that if a plane tries to hit it, it can blast off!!! YAYYYYY

Don't know if anyone here has seen/read the original concepts, that CG image doesn't really justify the design. So heres a good little link
http://24.46.42.210:1818/Sinehea…
(make sure you check out page 2, the concept explained)
I like the ideas Gaudi had going for the building, circumferential gallery, exibition hall, wall decor symbolizing the five continents etc. I would disagree with building a Gaudi knock-off though, it would not work out, & most certainly look kitch. Would be intersting to play around, addapt, modernise with the concept.and I agree with Pr2, the proposals so far are terribly boring.

The 3d image doesn't do the drawings any justice. The 3d image is ugly and I hate it.

Gaudí?
I spent my childhood playing in the parks where la Sagrada Familia sits and was excited to read the title of this thread...but uuugg I must say that is one fugly design, that looks like a still from a Jetsons backdrop.
we have the technology, and the blueprints are made. lets just stop bullshiting and build http://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/83…
