i was thinking of having a portfolio site and creating a co. name. does it help or hinder to have a semi fake company rather than just use your name? is it cheesy? could it help get work? i know people do it, so i am curious.

as trivial as it may seem, sometimes i think using a Company name makes a freelancer more marketable.
however, if an agency or potential client looks at your work and it's not up to par with a small design firm, that may severely hinder your jobs.
i've seen resume's laughed at because a newbie designer would say, 'Brand X Design' then they'd show their name and title as 'principal' or whatever.
if you've got a solid game as a freelancer, then i don't think it's lame at all. just be smart about it.
regardless of WHAT you call yourself, the work that you produce (your book) is the most important thing when getting new jobs.
hope that helps at all..

i i absolutely agree with
jking76..
there's nothing wrong with using doing that, provided the work is absolutely top notch..
ever heard of 'mad dogs and englishmen?'
freaky name...and i guarantee, if their work wasn't first rate, folks would have laughed at the name..
but with clients like these..and talent like they have..
no one laughs..
http://www.maddogsandenglishmen.…just do yourself a favour and don't give yourself a lame name..

nice exador, agreed.
that firm's got some huge clients, they need a site overhall. i love simple sites, but that ain't no thang..

oh, i know...
the site sucks ass..lets face it..
absolute rubbish..
but man...them boys got it..you know?...
those are clients people would kill for...
and if i remember correctly, it was their take no prisoners creative attitude that got it...nice to know it's possible eh?

more mediums, more branding, less emphasis on a sweet web design. thanks ex. this is what its all about!
- exador0
damn right...
that's one thing i find discouraging lately.....all i see and hear about is, oh, do you know this new technology?...or 'hows your action scripting?
or a link to some decidedly beautiful, but pointless motion graphic..
not that any of those are wrong..but wow...
when did people become technicians, and stop being creatives?
it's something to think about folks..
it's true..you usually get in the door by with a slick set of technical skills...
but if you want to stay, better make sure your art-direction and creative skills are even sharper...
one great idea, is worth a few thousand motion-tweens...

Always project yourself larger than you really are.
Think of it like padding your resume.

hmm. I would politely disagree. honesty is the best policy. just say you are a freelancer. art directors can smell it a mile away. might as well just say it's you.

vice versa.
i do my self in that way to mark clearly from different projects, commercial, creative.
