i was just sent an article from a japanese online magazine. I'd heard Nigo had said some no so nice things about people who buy his stuff.
"The very phrase that constitutes Nigo's BAPE logo, “A Bathing Ape,” has telling origins. “It's from the Japanese expression: ‘To bathe in lukewarm water' (Nuruma-yu-ni-tsukaru), and it's a comment on kids in Tokyo today. They're very shallow; they take things for granted, and they're not street savvy. It's sort of ironic for them to be wearing my clothing. I'm trying to show how they are incapable of being independent-minded. They have no plans, no goals, because they're just too comfortable. Like bathing in lukewarm water.”
how nice

I never did get that bathing ape hysteria that was going on.
But anyone wearing a bathing ape t-shirt can't really think they have an individual style, can they?
- CAJTBr0
that's great. i never liked bathing ape for that reason: it was all self-conscious stylers who wore it.
he proves his hypothesis right, makes some money and gets to take the piss out of them all at the same time.

rumor #1
all these bathing ape brand and figure limited edition culture was back-up by the japanese big corp and banks.
for one simple reason, to simulating to flow of currency of Yen/USD.

I wonder what his best mate james lavelle thinks baout that as he walks around stuck in the stuff. if it was all designed really well id defend it but some of it just isnt up to scratch.
cheers for the link very interesting. and yes those toys at hundreds are just crazy sometimes.

lots of jealous talk from a buck of people who think they got style. you can't afford it and even if you could ...well you can't. so you'll all idly chat about buying other shirts, which you don't, then think you have style because you're trying to be anti-style. so you just go back to being the losers that you are who are jealous of everything and everybody.
make sense/ good.

Whoa...someone has anger issues. This is a forum and people have the right to state their opinoins and this is coming from someone who can afford that crap, but wouldn't buy it cause there is better stuff out there...cheap and expensive. And if you gonna talk smack on a design forum you need to have skills to back that up...no...keep your insults to yourself.
- Arrandbee0
exactly. shut the *%&^ up, til you can back it up. i don't see you worthy of any lip, you dip.

I like the shirts that I've seen, pretty neat looking. as far as trend. Whatever, anti-style, style, do you what feel like, don't worry about other people.
For the guys comments... I don't live in japan, so I can't say, maybe he's right, maybe not. But just like everyone on this board, he is entitled to his opinion. If you don't like it don't support him. I don't think he's really harming anyone with his opinion...except maybe his own sales.

Like calling people in internet forums "jealous" is a testement to creativity or something?
Hilarious.
Some people can find better things to do with $80 than spend it on a t-shirt, so that makes them jealous?
Hilarious.
Do I need to be an automobile engineer to dislike a certain kind of car? Do I need to be a master chef to knock a restaurant?
Hilarious.
All in all, hilarious.

altough when bape satrted back in about 96 they had some nice ideas, reproducing other classic designs with a little twist. i've really noticed over the last 2-3 years, nigo seems to have run out of things to copy, or the idea has just become tired.
i've seen the occasional nice piece lately, but there seems far too many button down shirts with union jack flags or stars for my taste, and i did not like the baby blue fleece jacket i saw either!

Once Park Walk get going they will be alot better than Bathing Ape.

Just get in touch with the guy at Park Walk. His email address is on their site. TOp bloke. Very helpful. You can buy it in Slam City Skates as well.

That is interesting. I was in Tokyo and checked out the store. Luckily there was a Soriyama exhibit there and that was worth the while. But BAPE as design goes, I feel it's pretty interesting. I liked the look of the merchandise. I liked the image. Regardless of it's derivitive. Some designs were lame...but some weren't. But to judge it without seeing it is lame too.

BAPE do some nice stuff. I really like the camouflage gortex snowboard jacket they always do, but some of the stuff is a bit poor in my opinion.
I mean, I big up Park Walk, but I don't like all the designs that they have done.
- lee_b0
they've definately done a lot of good stuff, the whole design specticle of the shops is amazing, and is continuing to expand all the time. http://www.wonder-wall.com/space…
its just that i've been checking the shops for the last 4/5 years, these days i'm unipressed by 80% of what i see most of the time.
when they're good its some of the best stuff around, but some of the worst stuff is just a bit poor.

i bought a BAPE shirt off of eBay cause i can't get em anywhere else.
it's got a ying/yang camo graphic, i like it. quality shirt.
don't see anyone wearing them around town, i'm shallow, just like to have shit that no one else does, gives me warm fuzzies.
shit, i just might buy a few shirts from Urban if they fit me right, now there's the style whoring..
tee hee.
