PS2 trouble

My PS2 is making funny noises when trying to move the laser back and forth to go to different parts of the disc. I have to shake it violently and I can't play some games now.
When you watch a DVD though, it runs fine (doesn't have to move back and forth too much).
I've heard that there are many PS2s w/this problem, and some are able to get it fixed. I called sony and they want $105 to fix it.
Do you know if cleaning the head helps?

I had a buddy who was getting disk read errors with his PS2 - he had one of the first editions and apparently it was amjor problem - he did a bunch of research online - called Sony - originally they wanted 100 and something bucks to fix it but he went off on them - explaining how he knew about all these other cases etc. etc. anyway after his rant they just said send it to us and we'll fix it for free- and they did

it maybe just me but i don't think shaking your ps2 violently is the best idea...
