call me stupid...
is there a way of previewing text so it looks as it does on html sites? ie not anti aliased just like this text.all the very best

no, not really. There is new function in Photoshop 7.0 now - called system layout. But not in Illustrator. You may try turning anti-aliasing off (Ctrl-Y) but I am pretty sure it won't help you a lot.
