I am a New Media student and will be graduating mid Oct, there seems to be a lot of negative talk about the difficulties of this industry, what exactly is the problem? It gets me down.sniff sniff

Drive + Skill = Success, if you really want it and you know whatthe hell you doing, you'll make it, it won't be easy nothing is...but if you want it, go get it.

Well I can tell you from experience, that pants full of poo is not going to help your situation in the slightest.
My advice, if you have a problem with incontinence, take a backup pair of drawers to meet clients and on interviews. It's gotten me out of a many sticky situation.

be confident about your skills, and sell yourself.. you should be fine
good luck

So is this the case? are all the people moaning about the industry, lazy, have no confidence or jusy downright crap?

there are jobs out there. if you are student with a student portfolio, go out and do some charity work for a non profit and get some real work to show some potential clients. the market is picking up again.

You'll soon be able to relate to people on NT®.
The industry can be shit, clients can be shit, and designing stuff you dont wanna design can be shit!!! Just last thursday 3 people at my work were made redundant. That really doesnt do much for morale. Just enjoy student life whilst you can, and try not to stress, its not all doom and gloom, honest ;P

nice one chaps ! i did hear some interesting statistics the other day though which was a little uplifting, the internet potential in the next 10 yrs, its only 10% of the telecommunications so far, that means alot of potential users, that means marketing will be strongly directed here.sounds good.

bwahahahah!
what exactly is the problem!
people like YOU saturating the market, doing work that WE could be doing for peanuts, just to get your foot in the door, etc etc
That's the problem
;)

heh...like you never did jevad...
i hope you was kidding.
- chinaman0
jevad, i think you should just keep your comments to yourself if you got nothing inspiring to say like the rest of them that have posted....you prick.
- jevad0
fuck you chinaman i was kidding - note the winky face at the bottom of my thread.
Get your fucking inspiration from inside yourself.
The market is fucked - supply exceeds demand 10-fold. SO you have to be sharp, you have to be quick, and you have to know a fuck of a lot more than you did two years ago.
good luck
- chinaman0
calm down jevad, no need to swear so much.you sound more stressed than me.i'll take it all back.
- jevad0

chinaman,
Don't worryl. Even if the industry looks bad it will pick up. You just need to find the right angle. Don't stick with the overcrowded design areas, try to work with what you've got or can pick up. Go get clients from different sectors or select another platform (Pc->ITV-mobile->whatever) to work for.
I'll spare you from finnish cussing this time... ;)

see, there's always been quality designers out there, but if you're one of them who's jumped on the designer bandwagon and don't have solid skills with a strong understanding of design theory and such, you're S.O.L.
