Definately Maya. No doubt about it. The only problem is the $8000 price tag :P But it's not like most people really buy it anyway, if you get my drift :)
You can dl Maya LE and do everthing for free, only you wont be able to render without their nag text acoss the screen.

Dude... the new Maya is only $2000 still a lot of money yeah, but not 8G's... there is alao a special that Apple is running where if you buy Shake ($3000) you get Maya free. With that being said + Maya is becoming standard over lightwave... go for Maya.

Also... good luck stealing Maya.. it has license codes up the wazoo.

Depends on what you want. Maya is the standard in films, but Lightwave has it's place, too.
Maya for $2k comes with Mental Ray, which until now cost an additional $3k, so it's a pretty good deal (assuming you are going to buy it - if not, the licensing procedure is much more complex than other apps as it's aimed at networking).
Maya has more resources online, too, for materials, tutorials, etc.
Can't go wrong with either.

i use lightwave, and love it, very nice renderer
though maya seems to be your best bet in terms of widespread use among studios
if you were aiming to get a job professionally in 3D, either program is fine- as it always comes down to folio, not what program you used. So if you get the chance to test run both, do so, as you may 'click' with one interface and not the other.

I use Maya -- apart from the learning curve ( step as it is ) it's da bomb
