How did you get into art?

How did y'all get into art? I barely remember anymore. And I'm still very young. And it's not that long ago, and what I'm going to write is going to be obscured by history and retrospective effects, but I'm still going to try to keep it real like in hip-hop. Something I got into as a white kid in Europe because I thought it was cool to be Black. SO ROSA PARK and Marthin Luther waited around the corner. And so did Sage francis and Jay-z. but it was more of a trend thing and one of my first hobbies I spent lots of time on. Art came later, I remember coming to this very msg board and being intimitdated and impressed by the words, theories, names, thoughts shared here. Now I think it's all crap. but I decided to get to know. Partly because I wanted to denounce all the intellectuals and claim to get as much out of Donald duck as any university professor can get out of shakespare (not so radical maybe, since the rise of popular culture studies is still INCREASING). Partly because it promised me a better world, not with less poor people and a more democratic globalization, but for myself. Just like Bollywood, Hollywood, Vogue homes and all the other dream factories out there produces desires and attemps to seduces us. And its great, it gives a few poor university lecturers without lifeexperience a few jobs. (sorry had to do that, cos I thought it became to stiff and academic. Myself that is, but I'd like some pshycoanlyst to tlel me bout how I have to prove myself as anti everything, anti bourgouise is not enuff, anti elite is not enuff, anti everything that's outside my own ego and how that effects my love life. I think I could benefit from that). Anyays.the reason I wanted to denounce intellectuals and sometimes still want is when it becomes too academic and stiff. Hm. Bragging was another thing, intelligence. Etc. I dug it. I wanted it. I guess. Not the same with hiphop back in the days when I got into it. I think there figures a high level of inquiriy in kids that get into art. Higher than other hobbys perhaps. Although kids in England are an exception becos they think they can be Damien hirst. And also, my entry to art wasn't art history, or renesaince paiting. I had heard about it in skool but never listened, my entry was Basquiat,t he movie. Myth>warho>dreams>factory like empires>koons>brats>arrogance>fa... and fake. Etc. and I love it, still drags that baggage around with me and I love it. And I'd love to hear any of u start on nostalgia, 80es, myths and how that is in opposition to quality work, subtlety, maturity etc. (which are bougouise values anyways). So why do people think of the Turner Prize as outrageous, and they keep scratching their head at Martin creed's minimal nothingness – so that was a good tactics to oppose elite to bougouise (although I'd like a discussion on highbrow, lobrow, nobrow). But obscurity, uncertainty, things that don't match and add up (POSTMODERN) are closest associated to CONTEMPORARY ART. Comme des Garcons have maybe parodied, or capitalized codly or perhaps both or none (oh no the postmodern uncertainty) in the new Ad campaigns for their line SHIRT. YEAH. I want to hear about how you got into this art crap. Family? From comparative literature to barthes to carl andre? What? My entry was a purely selfmotivated pre-college state affair. And im thankful. I love matthew collings becos I think in his writings he is showing a constant awareness of the hostility you first meet when you encounter contemporary art. WORDS. NAMES. THEORIES. LOFTYNESS. ARROGANCE. Etc. and he makes great phycological analysis of that. Although subtle. Sorry for incomphrensiblity and lack of rhetroics but I like to keep true to my word combos of the moment. Peace.

My dad is an architect, and he used to paint. I liked seeing his paintings and drawings when i was a wee lad, and it turned me on to art.
