Chicago is considering passing a law forbidding smoking
in all restaurants and bars. Unless people speak up, this
law will be passed in early January!click here to sign online petition

well, that's the way it is in California, and it is a good thing. hey, want some smoke to go with your expensive meal? heck no!
bars are a little different, but it aint' that hard to just step outside
- jawbreaker0
they're also considering bans in Pittsburgh as well...
- arlo0
California is more convenient for such a ban because most of it's cities never see cold weather. Going outside for a smoke in Chicago on the other hand...

Thank You arlo

All I can say is it's about damned time.

USA: land of the free!
LMAO

exactly... i wanna be free to not be forced to smell the sh*t comin' out the butt of your butt...
- unknown0
I was expecting EXACTLY such a predictable answer...
Thing is:
Bar/restaurant owners should be able to decide on these matters themselves! That is freedom. Freedom to have a smoke with your pint, and freedom of having not to sit in another one's smoke...
Just a matter of decisions/maturity/diplomacy.
Why not even forbid alcohol in bars? huh?

Smoking is transcends personal freedoms... it's a hazard.

so is fireworks..

And fireworks are illegal in many American towns/cities.
So when I'm enjoying a meal at a restaurant, and someone comes and sits right next to me and lights up a cigar or cigarette, it's my 'freedom' to get up and leave halfway through my meal because I don't like it?
Would you mind if I came into a restaurant you were eating at, sat right next to you, and lit some incense that smelled like death?
- unknown0
no, like i said, if you were to leave that decision to owners of the restaurants/bars, and add a little creativity; you might actually find that really both freedoms can be forfilled...
Many bars/restaurants here have very efficient smoking/nonsmoking area's..Which can be helped with airconditioning systems and the likes.
A total ban is just ridiculous. Come on!
I quit smoking not long ago, but I am no freak to take away other peoples freedom and choice.
And if I was ever to visit Cuba, oh yes, I want to sit in a bar and light me a big Cuban cigar....puh!

As much as I HATE cigarette/cigar smoke and as much as I would like to never have to smell it again, I have to agree with 3cy. Why force all restaurants in a city to comply with such a law. Cars are more dangerous to the public than cigarettes. Why not take all the cars off the road.
Point is, it should be up to the restaurant owner to make that decision. If the owner decides to allow smoking and it hurts their business, so be it. What next, will the people of this country allow the government to ban smoking in homes next. You may laugh, but if we give them an inch... you know the rest!
Again, I hate cigarette smoke, especially when I take my family out to eat, but I would never support such a rediculous law. It is my right as a non-smoker to not go to a restaurant if I don't like the atmosphere. I'm not going to take away someone else's rights simply because I don't like the smell of smoke. I'll move to another seat. I love this country. Think before you support the downfall of it.

What about my freedom to breath. What about my freedom to avoid lung cancer from secondary smoke?
Freedoms are just fine until they represent a road block to someone else's freedom.
I hope to see the ban grow to more cities!

Death to smokers!
Then again, tht's a little redundant, innit?
- miracola0
I'll forgive you guys for being ignorant. Every day you walk outside, you get more crap cycling through your lungs than you would for an hour in a restaurant.
So what, smoke is annoying. I agree. But so is body oder. Maybe they can force people to take showers and use soap. I've smelled some BO that rivals cigarette smoke. While they're at it, maybe they could ban ugly people from restaurants. I hate looking at ugly people when I eat. Oooh, ooh, ban children too. They are loud and obnoxious at restaurants. No need for them either, right?
I'm sure you guys are just young and confused or just lack common sense, but if you don't like smoking at a particular restaurant, go to another restaurant next time. Tolerance is the key to peace. I've learned to tolerate your ignorance.
HUGS & KISSES!
