Me, Chris Lea and our friend Jessey are finishing a book for Wrox Press about building a full PHP /MySQL web site with a full CMS for apps etc. The code is for the most part done and needs a bit of banging around before we begin the chapter reviews. Keep two things in mind:
1. There is no design.
2. We didn't put every single content and feature consideration into play as we are limited on time and really just wanted to lay the groundwork. Please go through the site and play around if you don't mind. The checkout for the shopping cart isn't finished yet either.

works like it should mike, good job
question about polls in general: is there any way to tell if a user has already voted by storing it server-side rather than storing a cookie on the user's machine?
almost all polls i've been to all i have to do is delete cookies and i can vote again -- repeat it over and over and you have one hell of an unbalanced voting system

thanks gabe, if you can create an account then you can comment on news and participate in the forums. that's what we really need to see.
as far as the poll. you could require registered users and then ensure through a vote record that it only gets voted on once. you could store it in a session but that would expire upon closing the browser. you could do it on ip addy, but most are dynamic and that would be a bad idea... plus large companies share external ip's often. polls are good to just get a general idea of user preferences... if someone really wishes to delete and re-vote over and over... well, you can't stop a bum from pissing in the park either can you? whaddayagonnado.

yeah i hear that...
but, you can stop a bum from pissing on your shoe though.
hopefully you'll never have to of course

gabe, I honestly can't wait til you get out here so I can duct tape your mouth shut and fingers crossed...

i think it works great. very quick, and functional...
the (next previous ?) buttons on the forums (bottom right) are a bit confusing. might want an if($more) there for non-confusion's sake.
products and cart seem to work well, but i got a not found for the checkout page:
http://wrox.mediatemple.net/siteā¦Tons of luck to you with your book!!!

i played around, made an account, and didnt seem to break anything... i even got a nice surprise in my inbox after i made my account, so my guess is that everything is working.
in the forums section i didnt really understand the favorites link, as it didnt seem there was any way to add a favorite, but i would guess that was intentionally left out?
anyway, looked good to me.

enobrev + neeko: chris has some tidying up to do on the forums... and I think the favs part broke... he should be working on it soon, hopefully.
jessey is finishing the checkout tonight, we hope... so that's why you received the not found error.
thanks so much for going in and poking around... it helps alot!

enobrev + neeko: the favourites did work, but they're not now. I'll figure it out tomorrow. At the moment, I'm going to blame mike, since obviously he broke it when he added his pretty buttons to that page. :]
- chl0
Ah HA! It actually was Mike's fault!!!
I'm fixing it now, but thanks very much for the catch neeko.

The favourites should be fixed on the forums now folks. If anyone wants to test that and post back here with impressions, I'd be most grateful. Thanks.

it was worth it to get rif of those fuck-all ugly-ass HTML buttons mr. lea(z)

the favorites option didnt seem to work for me... i tried to add them, but when i went to the favorites page, she was blank.
- mike0
yeah chris... that shit isn't working?
