i dont think the problem is that 800x600 is too small, it is the fact that a designer has to design for all screen resolutions. print dont have to worry about that (you can still print 4x4inch 200dpi in the same space as a 4x4inch 300dpi piece)
the problem is that when we get rid of 800x600 we webbers will be bitching about 1024x768 - "when will everyone finally move to 1200x1600 - fuck"
i remember something along these lines with 640x480 vs 800x600
