Must admit Im still a 9.2 user.
Is it worth it now to switch to OS X in a production environment?
I have most of the big name software that can run in X so I wouldnt need to rely to heavily on Classic Mode.
Thoughts? Experiences?

Do it now.

good time to switch.
no more allocating memory to individual apps. pure multi-tasking, no more system freezes.
and the list goes on...

I was going to ask if it worth it today also. I want to for more stability and some new programs that support it and not OS 9.
I have PS 5.5, Ill8, DW 3, Flash 5, etc.
Im worried that I may need new programs (although I probably will soon anyway)??
and how is it working in classic mode? OK?
Im also afraid Ill erase some data? Can anyone answer these questions?

Jaguar is very stable

if you are going to use 9 and want to try out X, I would:
-backup everthing
-partition the drive 1:3
-load 9 on one large, and
-X on the other.this give you the option of booting up to either OS.
that's how i slowly switched, now my drive is one partition of X.

I just did it on my Pismo.
IE's performance sucks but for a stable OS that has yet to crash, it's a small price to pay.
I'm very happy.

IE? IE to the trash! Get the Apple browser: Safari.. Really neat! It's still a public beta, but it workin'.. and fast! And minimal and user friendly..

I'm not sold on Safari, since a lot of pages look really strange on it. Plus, it'd take the second coming of christ for me to completely abandon IE. I love it, and it loves me.
As for OS X, I've been very happy ever since I made the switch about a year ago. I can't imagine using 9 anymore, X has changed the way I look at things. I thought I'd hate the dock, using Classic mode, etc, but now they're a way of life. The dock is awesome. Classic mode's a minor annoyance, but it gets to the point where you don't even use it anymore.
Jaguar was a nice step up. Not something I like the idea of paying for, since it's not a full upgrade, but it runs much smoother and faster.
And I've only had a couple system issues, mostly due to my tinkering around with things. Anybody else got the "We are hanging here" screen at bootup? What a dreaded sight that is...

Mac OS X includes over $10,000 worth of high quality fonts licensed from designers and type foundries
Is that true?

You should back up-partition- and start fresh...
Since I made the switch I cant stand the thought of using OS 9 ... so far my system has been running none stop for 78 days/19 hours/ and 35 seconds with only two small crashes involving IE 5.2 and ironically this site and one itunes crash...
asI type this I am using Carbon Copy to Back up my system- burning a CD in toast, have photoshop, dreamweaver, word, safari, and chimera opened and limewire is downloading some music.....
go ahead- and never look back!!!

OS X is slow. And I am getting really tired off Agua and the exaggerated drop shadow. It annoy me everyday. Love the Iapps though, itunes, ical etc..

I would say it depends on your computer. I have a G4 400mhz w/64M AGP video card (thought it would help) and it is way slower than 9. If you're running apps that can't boot in X then I would say forget the upgrade.
I bought a video card and more RAM(>800M)hoping it would increase system performance but to no avail. :(
However it does have neat apps like itunes3 and my dig-cam now has no problems interfacing with the OS. The 10K in fonts are...well not very different from the usual fanfare. Mostly 10K because the are in the new OTF format I'm guessing.

Someone posted a link here for an app that removes those drop shadows btw.

has anyone had any trouble switching from OSX to Jaguar?
Any steps i should take before mounting?

OS X is incredibly slow.
and the 'new' finder SUCKS
I still can't stand the thing.
Remove all that eye candy, speed it the hell up, re-design the finder, improve the dock and I'll think about it.
I have a dual 867 and it's not fast.
Not on the dual 1Ghz at work.Retarded.

I dunno what your problem is, cinder...
I have 2 yr old Mac and Jaguar runs like a ...jaguar.
And Safari is so damn fast...
Need to be convinced to make the step to X?

I never used OS9, but I REALLY like OSX. I think it's the best consumer level operating system that's ever been released, and I've used about all of them (including BE for a while.)
As for browsers, I like Chimera, which is based on Mozilla but uses a native OSX interface so it's faster. The rendering engine (gecko) is superior to that of Safari (which uses KHTML.)
You can get Chimera from the Mozilla websit here.

I ditched the Mac for XP about two years ago mainly because 9 was terrible and OSX had just come out and was causing people to reformat left and right. Slow, memory problems, crashed, poor hardware support, etc.
Now that X is apparently stable and there are a ton of apps for it, I want to sell my windows machine and get that 17" beauty that just came out.
And for people complaining about the aqua look, get smoothstripes or something like that.

"The rendering engine (gecko) is superior to that of Safari (which uses KHTML.)"
You don't mean speed, do you Chris?
I noticed Safari is faster then any browser on my system (Jaguar)..
What makes gecko superior in this case?
