    illtronix,
Chip is right about free iApps. Your link is old news from yesterdays rumors. All the iApps are free except for iDVD which was never free. Now the iDVD CD comes with all the other new versions of the iApps. You're silly if you think Apple is going out of business. They've been going out of business for close to 20 years as far as I can tell. I've personally owned and used Macs for 10 years and Apple has been going out of business the whole time. Yet they have 6 Billion in the bank, are at the head of the innovation curve and are releasing the coolest software and hardware out there for consumers right now. Plus they have X11 and new servers with faster chips finally on the horizon. I wish their hardware was closer in price to PCs on the desktop side of things but that's like wishing an Audi S4 cost what a Subaru WRX cost. When you compare the features on paper they are both Turbo AWD cars with close to the same accelleration but there is a reason I drive the S4. It's the same reason I'm typing this on a Titanium PowerBook. Some people can't see it, others can. As long as Apple produces products in this caliber I, along with many others, will continue to vote with our wallets who stays in business and who files chapter 11. I could go on but for now

    iSupport: Apple!

  • soda0

I think SL34ZY said it all.
    Amen brother!

  • drqshadow0

I'd be upset if they started charging for iTunes upgrades. My favorite MP3 software on earth...

Otherwise, they can charge all they want. I don't use iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD.

The fact is, the PC industry as a whole is HURTING. Selling computers is a tough business, they are expensive to make, and market.

You guys also forget that Apple would have compltelely FAILED in the eary 90's if it wasn't for a 50 million dollar investment from MS. Which is why IE became the defaulr browsers for MAC.

Apple will survive, but it just is not a good company to invst your money in right now :(

  • soda0

no one was disputing the now famous injection of cash from MS n the 90's. The thread refered to the claim that apple were going to go under, which you agree they won't do.
I do agree with you the whole industry is hurting, I don't think apple are suffering anymore than others?
Actually, what company is a worthwhile investment these days...Who makes M16s???
I hear war is a growth market.....

  • artboy0

Believe that Colt makes the M-16. I imagine that they are eagerly anticipating a growth in revenue shortly...

But Apple's new products are pretty cool; wish I had the green to cough up on a new Powerbook. Wow. Now Apple really needs to turn their attention to their desktops. Faster processors, please!

War is NOT "profitable". This "meme" is an example of "The Broken Window Fallacy" elucidated by Frédéric Bastiat

sleaz, I think ur car is great. been using Macs for 10 years? me too.

that said, you still havent told me what fundamentals Apple has that will keep it in business. For that matter, the majority of what I've read in this thread has pointed out everything but. I know that we'd have no palms and pocket PCs were it not for the newton. I am also aware of apple's position on the edge of the innovation curve. Super! But that doesnt translate into ISPs replacing their DELLs and Compaqs w slikkassX11s. It doesnt translate into schools buying more iMacs - in fact MS is muscling its way into the education market for the past couple. the fact that apples 866Meg procs can asswup any 1.5 gig Pentium 4 is great news to me but how does that afftect the fact that dell desktops sell for $500 and laptops $900 - and ultimately which box a starving ass college student is going to blow a chunk of her student loan on?

'but there is a reason I drive the S4.' well wtf is it? and do enough
folks share ur POV to keep that car in production? Actually, I didnt even know they sold those in the US. thte first time I heard S-anything was in Ronin when main man ordered the S8. Maybe this is the wrong line of argument...

Tell me something plausible like, Apple can sustain itself nicely selling to design professionals - and that that's all they need -while slowly penetrating the geek market ... something I can sink my teeth in to. Im very aware of how great and forward-looking apple is, I just want to know how that innovation will result in their success and survival.

audi's are great great cars btw, the only euro car Id ever own. but I'll take a WRX - or anything subaru makes - anyday over any vehicle. that's just me.

    good post illtronix

i want to see these bencmark results though, i use a G4 733 with 896 MB of ram and it is really slow. it runnin osx trying to work quickly in photoshop is impossible, the tools dont keep up, zooming in and using the hand tool takes twice as long as it should. switching apps is slow and the macromedia squite is sluggish. trying to edit HTML in dreamweaver is a chore on this mac.

i have a 1.4 ghz with 512 ram running windows xp at home and it blazes. its shocking how much faster the interface reacts. not to mention all the other great features xp has, like browsing by thumbnails.

i dont know where these benchmarks come from, cause in my experience macs are much slower than comparable pcs.

  • chinaman0

    i'm scared.....mommy !

  • illtronix0

good lord, 8dot3, thats like my wet dream. Now Im too asahmed to even talk about about what I use.

as for the sluggishness, u got me stumped. Ive read/been told that jaguar is markedly faster than 10.1 (even search thie PV-AN for osx or jaguar posts) so maybe thats an issue. I havent felt the need to upgrade but maybe when I get my DW MX suite next week that need may be felt lik enever before.
Otherwise, Ive used macromedia and adobe apps on PCs (running Win2k)and my Macs ( some 9.x and X but not on the same box, fuk that ) and I havent found any significant diffs in speed.
    but thats me so...

I'd love to tell you why apple will stay a-float. The sad fact is, I can't. I just know what I've seen. I've seen Apple death rumors for as long as I've owned one. I really don?t have enough statistics to make any valid arguments and I?m too lazy to look for them. I don?t know how their servers are doing. I don?t know how many schools are buying eMacs. I don?t know how many designers are buying PCs because they can get 3GHz for less than the price of Apple?s dual 1GHz. I don?t know how many switchers there are.

I do know a few things though. I know the PC industry didn?t always have the margins it has right now. That?s really hurting it. Gateway is hurting, Compaq got absorbed, no name companies are dropping like flies and no-one notices. I read somewhere that Dell sells some of their computers at a loss. Even if that isn?t true and Dell just sells their computers at very slim margins this behavior is hurting the industry as a whole. Companies that can?t maintain these economies of scale are dying. Apple has yet to succumb to these micro-margins. That is partially because Apple sells a hardware/software combo that is different. The question is wether elegant software and industrial design is enough of a benefit to people to let Apple keep it?s margins like they are. It?s worked for them for the last 20 years. Hopefully it will work for them for another 20. If it doesn?t that will be a sad day because the long list of Apple innovations that has changed the PC industry for the better since they?ve been around will stop. Even if you only use a PC loosing Apple would hurt.

I wish I could say that iPods, iApps, iMacs, iBooks, eMacs, PowerBooks, PowerMacs, Xserve, Airport, OS X or any other thing Apple sells is enough to keep them around but I can?t. All I can say is those things are attractive. Are they enough? Time will tell. Just keep the faith and don?t believe the nay-sayers, they?ve been wrong many times in the past.

On a different note have you seen the new Subaru STI announced this week that?s due to come to America? OMFG... 300ft/lbs 300BHP

All the question marks should be apostrophes in my last post. I used a text editor to compose that last message and they didn't paste in right.

  • illtronix0

SL34ZY, your points are well taken.
    as for that car....holy fuck

lol..'its not for everybody'. scary good. thanks for the link.

  • surfito0

i think the "going out of bussines" apple rumors are no more that an advertising strategy to keep people talking about them.

if its not, then it should be, i have seen sooo much apple for the last couple of days that my feelings of wanting a mac are even stronger.
