got laid off about 1.5 years ago - had to wait tables to make ends meet and I hated my life. I find that if I am not happy with what I am doing I am always drinking and upset and angry...
Freelance was cool fro a while, but the clients dont always pay on time and I am sick of waiting on others for my living (having trouble eating for christs sake).
It just pisses me off that with all the experience etc. that I can not find a job doing design.
Is it wrong that I leave? I feel like a quiter but I have to pay my bills....anyone else in a similar position?

Right on man,..this is not directed at you, but more than half of the so called designers out there never should have entered this industry in the first place,(what's left of it). Most of them cant even draw, its really sad.
I mean really,... aside from Arnuad Mercier, James Widgren, Gmunk,...who's really good? 90% of portfolios i see suck ass.
TO ALL YOU PEOPLE, PLEASE LEAVE AND STOP FLOODING THE MARKET WITH YOUR SHITTY TALENT ,..THE REST OF US NEED WORK.

But for real...
Find new clients! New markets even! Don't be lazy! Get out there...contact clients/companies/governments/me... ....anything.... they all need proper design work!

... I have so much work that I don't know what to do with myself... I'd pass it on to some of you... but I gotta help take care of the ol' classmates from college first.
Try this... locate some of the small marketing companies that are local in your town... there are TONS of little businesses like that in all major cities. Then, introduce yourself... let them know what you can do.
I design fulltime for a magazine that is owned by a small marketing firm. I also get regular work from two other advertising/marketing co's. Let them do the work and bring the client to you... it's working for me.

Didnt you know your not aloud to be new at design? Like James said... hell there is only 4 great designers in the world (man James you are honestly a retart)...
try and try again- keep your head up- and dont even bother listening to Jackasses like Mr.Dong because the opposite is true from what he said also... there are tons of supposed designers who think just becasue they can draw comic book characters and won first place in high school for some shitty still life oil painting they understand design.
You can never know enough really... so although it isnt paying the bills... keep learning and practicing everyday and stay focused on the "purpose" of design. The market blows now and you might need to do something else in the meantime- just like ANYONE in ANY profession when times are hard.
Maybe one day those 4 great ONLY designers of the world will quit their jobs and if James doesn't apply for it you might have a chance.

OH - was I the newbie? I have only been at this shit since '98 - guess I am a newbie...
I have plenty of work to show what I can do - my problem is people paying on time, and doing what they say they will do when it comes to the money end.
That is why I am fed up. Fed up with the market being dry, fed up with people not paying me...the only thing I am not fed up with is actual food.
sorry for the rant - I am going to go stick my head in the toilet.
