Motion Graphics Question....

In most motion graphics quicktimes i see, there are some lines that will come into the shot and almost 'draw' themselves. Like, the leading edge of the line will come in the left of the screen and do a few loops and exit the right side, the rest of the lines "trail" remains on screen. Hopefully you guys understand what i am describing?!
Is there a better way to do this? i have been using AE and painstakingly making masks of each line....any help is appreciated.

Computer Arts, Nov. 2002 has a tutorial on it. Something about a 'Write On' feature. Look at their site:

i agree.. i do that sometimes myself.. work in flash.. 720x540 and export as a 30fps QT.. and 29.97it in AE.

The Write-On filter is probably the easiest way to do this in AE. You can make a path in illustrator/freehand, then just paste it into the position keyframes in that filter. I think the AE help file describes how to do this.

Make your vector art/lines in illustrator, then import them into AE. Use the AI files as an alpha for write-on paint layers. Write on filter is a beautiful thing. Very similar to drawing on type. Lots of examples in stardust.tv demo reel.
