my girlfriend got a 20gb windows ipod today (oh yes, I'm jealous!) and I actually thought you'd be able to store files on it (eg from uni (mac) to home (pc) or something similer)
or even download music back onto the pc .. I remember something about copyright issues apple were having about the "music theft"
anyone know?thanks in advance.

i here you just pop some kind of firmware or proggie on it, and it enables free copying ;-)

I dunno about flashing firmware on her ipod (nor mine when I get one)
that'd void warrenty too..well anyway... I found that you can dump files on there as a removable harddrive.. which comes up in my computer ( I swear it wasn't there before) no matter, this thing rules. :D

i don't own one sadly, so in simple, that means you can treat it as a removable hard-disk?

You can use the ipod as a firewire drive, but it's set up to flag MP3 files and make them invisible so you can't just go and move music from one computer to another. That would be illegal.....um, right. Thats why if you open the ipod on the desktop you won't see your playlists or mp3 files in there.
Anyhow it's just Apple covering their asses. There are freeware apps and utilities that will let you grab music off your ipod.
