I downloaded some great wallpapers (courtesy of tokidoki), and noticed something after extracting the zipped folders. Two of the extracted wallpapers are the exact same size as the zipped folders, while the third actually LOSES 1KB after extracting. If this is the case, what is the advatage to zipping files up?

pretty sure that zip uses run-length encoding with tagging, or some variation thereof, that uses a dictionary that contains that tags it uses. in some cases the dictionary can be greater than the space saved, if the contents are not very compressible.
i'm no expert on compression, though. perhaps http://www.everything2.com can help?

when you ZIP a file there is options that you can choose ...
store-fastest-fast-normal-good-b...If you never choose ''best'' your compression ratio is at default to 'normal' wich is not always a good choice.
'best' can often reduce more than the half the size of images files

they're like envelopes for sending multiple files to people, with the bonus of being able to do it in a bandwidth-friendly way.
