In After-effects (5.5 non production bundle) I need to export a composition as a series of PNG's with a transparent background. How would I accomplish this?

choose: "composition" then "make movie" then set your "output module" when that prompt comes up. under the "output module" choose png sequence then choose your format options.

Which hasn't been a problem so far the only issue is that I want my series of PNG's to have transparent backgrounds.

push my thread down... I'm not giving up that easy ;)

in the "output module settings" in the "video output section" you can choose "RGB + ALPHA" in the channels.

Is there a setting I have to change in the composition to give it it a transparent bg...
cause on export I'm still getting a black background (which is the background colour I have selected.)

are your trying to use some text animation? what are you trying to overlay the pngs on? can you take your final background and render it in ae? or are you using the pngs in flash?

only certain file formats export transparency that photoshop can recognize. targa sequences, for example, have transparency that photoshop can read.
otherwise, export your comp as a PNG, video options set to (RGB + Alpha), and your color as 'straight (unmatted). once the file has been exported, bring it into photoshop, and duplicated the layer (so that it is unlocked; you can also press apple+j). go to the 'select' menu > 'load selection' and load the alpha for that file, with the 'invert' option selected. DELETE the alpha selection, and you should have transparency.
this should all work, theoretically, if PNG is a 32-bit file format (i.e. 24-bit + alpha).
good luck
