I highly suggest you to take a crash-course in a university or a college or something

Took me about 5 months of schooling and 6 months on the job to feel remotely comfortable with it. I did Civil Design, but there are numerous applications.

I am not sure why you would 'want' to learn acad. Personally, and I'm an architect, I don't enjoy using it. It's great for large projects with many xref drawings, but for fooling around, it's a bit too complex.
Buy a book for $30, it's the cheapest way.

you can usually find adult learning courses in cities. i know here, they run about 50 bucks for all the classes. it would get you a good introduction to the program.
it's really not that hard. i had 4 years of it in high school...i learned to program the lsp routines when i was a freshman in college. that's when autocad really opens up for you.
funny thing, after all that learning, once i got to school and started studying architecture, we never used computers.
:)
it also might be easier, if you are really interested in learning the program, to start with an older version (like 10 or 12) or a simpler cad application.
there are plenty of open-source ones, you can probably find one for windows...that would at least give you a base for how cad programs work.
