Fucking kills me, I've been rendering a scene for like 65+ hours non-stop. I've been trying to keep my brain from not melting by visiting every site I can and working out like a freak.
what do you folks do to not bounce off the walls while you wait?

i love rendering. great excuse to be away from the box.
go outside! chill with friends... the real world is pretty cool sometimes... think of it as a super-realistic video game.

You've Been In graphics Too Long When...
You get despondent while walking in the woods and think "I'll never be able to render this in real time."
You once sat up all night watching your home computer calculate the mandlebrot set with 16 colours and a resolution of 200x200.

Ha! I remember back in 1995 we'd do all of our corporate video work in Premiere - one night we set up a render and the next morning it was still doing its thing...estimated remaining render time: 4 months, 3 weeks, 9 days, 14 hours, 32 minutes!!!

heh yeah, I've been keeping away but the evil blue light of my monitor is caaaaaling me.

65 hour renders are dangerous.
especially if something goes wrong in the render ...
an unexpected layer you thought was hidden pops up,
shit like that ....thats why for the sake of quicker render times I advocate low quality mega-Aliased low bit rate
crap ass render settings ...tell your client its the new style.

2 weeks ago I use to do all my renders on my to powerbook.
dform1 hooked me up with a super fast pc system.
so we did a test - a 3d model. powerbook- render time: 4hours
Pc (dual amd 2200+) : 2 min
I have been like....ok but can u handle this or that.
so fast.

are there companies were you can take your files, leave them there and come back a month later?
anyways, i dont render anything that is gonna take too long, i only have 1 computer, so, i only do overnight stuff.
in aftereffects, i dont mess around too much so my renders are quick, and in 3d, i suck at that, so things like global illumination and complicated models i keep them on the side till the day i decide to model something really serious.
that day, i get me a better computer.
still a long way from that.

Buy yourself another machine! I've got my dual xeon 2.2 for rendering and my PIII for web work and modeling. It keeps you sane and you are twice and productive.
I agree with Transfatty, too, at least break up the renderings or you'll hate life when you've got days worth of crap that's incorrect.
Lastly, here's a render farm. Never used one but I know people who have.

What we try to do at uni is use about four machines to render our work and get each one to render about 60-100 frames (depending on the lighting, antialiasing or objects) and then stitch it all back together again in final cut pro :)
