I recently completed http://www.canongate.net/pi - about 16 months after receiving the initial brief from the client.
For various reasons, I never really got stuck into it for 12 months, just dabbling and then started working on it with a bit more focus.
And then the book it's promoting won the Booker Prize which gave me a real kick up the arse to get it finished.
It's by far the longest duration for any project I've worked on. But the thing is I reckon it benefitted from this. I wasn't rushed into an execution. I really had time to evolved my concepts creatively.
So what's the longest duration you've had for a project and why? And was the end result stronger as a result of this?

took a year or so to get from initial brief to finished result.
but that was with to and fro ing with different designs. then working out what they wanted from the site etc.

It's a tie.
4 months.
Directed stereoscopic KISS video "Psycho Circus".
4 months.
Modeled, animated and rendered 15 scenes of 3D computer generated jets to be composited onto film plates for Lockheed Martin.
This was years ago so this wouldn't take as long today as computer render faster.

Commercially (fulltime) the longest project i have worked on took more or less one year from start to finish. It was a website for a product that was still in test and development phase, therefore no proper branding, product details...etc were available yet the client needed a website.
Once the website was complete the entire project was canned.
A complete waste. For everyone involved.Uncommercially i've been working on a site/game that has been on my desktop for almost a year and half...still not finished. Although it's given me a lot of satisfaction from learning from it and taking ideas (based upon it) into other areas and projects...
ps. The life of Pi looks great, spent a couple of minutes and will return there at lunch time.
Nice one.

http://www.attcanada.comdoesn't look a thing like my original designs...
we almost went live with the original about 6 months ago...
but the launch was canelled, and a complete re-do was put in the works...
not terribly excited about the design, as i had little to do with it, but i'm glad it's finaly finished...
.......
s'weird....
most times as art-director, i really get the creative control that i need to make a project come through with my vision..
and then theres the other times..
like this one...
oh well...
like i said..
at least it's done :)

Thank's Bluejam. The site just went live this afternoon and it's already getting hit VERY hard.
That bandwidth allowance is disappearing fast.
Hmmm.
