if i go to cali, where's the best place to surf? beautiful would be nice too!
also, what kind of board should i start out on? i used to skate if that means anything. guns look pretty cool, but i don't know.

Guns are for big wave riding, I'd suggest you get a regular longboard and get your ass down to old mans beach in San Clemente so cal. It's a good spot and pretty remote. You can camp there and have a fire and drink. I dig it.

is there such a thing as skipping the prerequisite long-board learning trials, or is this stuff a lot harder than it looks?
i grew up near the ocean, but sadly i never took the time to learn to surf..

also, how would you rate malibu?

i'm in Encinitas, Cali.
learning how to surf, it is harder than it looks. i'm great at snowboarding, but the mountain doesn't shift beneath my feet!look at the cool surfboards I got as tradeout for a design job:

6'2 thruster. Used to surf all over LA all the way down to k38 up to county line. Now slush at Ocean Beach San Francisco. But Hawaii is no joke. My favorite spot? Trestles.....okay San Onofre

"learning how to surf, it is harder than it looks"
so does this mean i'll never learn to surf starting with a gun?

Keeps me sane.
If I did'nt surf I would go mad

anyone have any other input?

mitsu, I'd say you should try a longboard, get the feel of it, start on small waves. i started on a 7'6" egg board (rounded front end), it was very stable and easy to ride. Nothing bums you out more than trying for weeks and never standing up, believe me.

Any where in New England. Had some epic sessions at Marconi on the Cape, Secret spots in Boston, and countless breaks in New Hampshire. Empty lineups, good waves, ...AHH I wish it was still fall.
Spring should be good.

i've got very good balance and i'm athletic. how long before i can expect to graduate to a gun or fish?
what's the average, at least?
thanks for the advice btw.

I learned on a longboard. I started in 7th grade. Took just over a year to move on after conditioning, reflexes, getting the hang of it. Just do it mitsu. If you're doing it for yourself, there's do pressure to get good at it fast. You'll get good anyways. I really should suggest that you look for the 'good' waves. Not blown out, nice shape, at least 3 to 4 foot.
