In the Dominican Republic, "de-curling" is not just a chemical process; it's a way of life. The ritual of de-curling has become a huge part of our tradition and culture. No one wants to have curly hair. Having curly hair means you have "bad" or "kinky" hair, you have a "cactus-head." And those are just some of the words used to describe it!

Potasa, 100% Relaxer, is a social documentary titled after the chemical used to the de-curling process. These images shows that the source of this phenomenon is our desire to disguise the physical and visible proof of our Afro-Caribbean roots; our society, whether consciously or unconsciously, favors white values to those of the black race.
Using humor and irony, this installation is a living representation of the collective unconscious and conscious mind of the Dominican people.
