i like teak wood sticks that look very similar to chopsticks, i shape the tips to my needs and then i boil the tips for 3 hours as the wood itself is not pourous i want to open the pores itself for a certain technique i will deescribe below for some mind boggling techniques!!! ok so you first must boil the tips for 3 hours, it takes time and must be done very much like when developing film you must flip that can this way that way blah!
ok after you have boile the sticks you put the wood in WaterProof India Ink, remember it must be WATERPROOF or all of this iss for nothing..leave the teak sticks in the india ink for 6 hours, the ink itself will be absorbed at a very slow rate all the up the wood coating it and strengthing its texture and feel. the india ink also acts as a barrier when mixing with many colours. after 6 hours has passed take the tools out of the ink and put them in the freezer over night, you want to make the molecules in the wood to be as dense as possible, the teak wood is the best solid pourous mass for this technique. the next day go purchase inks and dyes, i prefer LUMA DYES as the colours are extremely vibrant...now is the fun part, you can take the stick and dip it into the brightest yellow, then the darkest blue, then green, then red. try it! then apply to a minimum of 90pound cold or hot press water colour paper, i prefer ARCHERS or FABRIANO CLASSICO, and start to paint or draw, i also work on a flat surface, but if you like the drip look hold your canvas verticle, ok baCK, the first colour you will see will be the last colour you dipped the tool in, it will flow as bright as the reddest red ever and when the colour is no longer on the tip, the previous colour shows up like you just dippied it within its container..this goes all the way to the first colour you dipped your tool in. this is better than any brush out there and if you create your tool correctly you can create your own new very stylized technique!!!
good luck and happy trees!!!!
