When transcribing spoken Cantonese into Chinese characters, the vast majority of characters will be exactly the same as the Mandarin equivalent, but there is a small subset of characters that is unique to the Cantonese dialect. Cantonese people can understand standard written Mandarin by substituting Cantonese pronunciation for the characters but the sentence construction and word choice will be different from that of spoken Cantonese.
