whoa, whoa, whoa. This vote had nothing to do with Quebec or BC separating.

First of all, BC isn't going anywhere, they'd be more fucked than Quebec if they lost the Fed Cash. Second, the whole notion that the current Liberals have completely lost any sway in Quebec is total Conservative rhetoric.

Sure, there's a small problem with the confidence of Franco's in the current government, but that's totally normal. They're just testing the water of a new goverment. Hell, if you cook poutine the wrong way they start to talk about separation.

Gilles Duceppe is by far one of the most convincing separatist leaders in a long time, but he's not stupid. He knows damn well how much federal cash flows into his "nation" so he's not about to fuck it up by calling for another referendum or some such other pointless BS. He's smart enought to know that the fact that he holds 54 seats gives him a lot of power in federal decisions and he can dangle the separatist carrot over the leading party, but he'll never use it because it would screw him.

As for the conservatives - they're fucked. In my mind it breaks down like this:

~ they had their chance to form government now

~ at best that would have been a minority, a la Joe "Captain Enthusiasm" Clarke

~ they were too late, this confidence vote should have happened weeks ago

~ now they're screwed because there's no election until next year, which gives the liberals the time they need to mend things with the general public (which already prefers them anyway, despite any bullshit "Adscam".)

~ the general population does NOT agree with the conservative platform

~ so, they'll lose the next election

~ which means that Harper is out, 2 time loser == fuck off && new leader

~ Mackay is the only one left that has any potential at all, but there's no way he could defeat someone like Paul Martin, or Bill Graham

~ so he loses *that* election

~ Belinda would have been a contender but she's defected so after Mackay the conservatives are left with no players

~ but the liberals still have their Ace In The Hole: Pierre Pettigrew

~ Pierre Pettigrew runs a modern version of Trudeau's orginal campaign, gets elected and reigns for another 12 years

~ Voila! 20 more years of Liberal rule.

In short, Harper is a moron, he should have taken down the governement weeks ago, by waiting he allowed Belinda to cross the isle and now he's fucked his party for another 2 decades.

Mark my words, he'll go down in history as the worst Canadian politician ever.

Hell, even Joe Clarke actually formed government at one point in time.

    As for previous comments:

    1. Yes, I was watching live and was on the edge of my seat. I actually stood up and clapped with Cadman stood up.

    2. Exactly: the conservatives just don't get it. If you want to form goverment and create legislation then you have to stand FOR something, not just against what is currently being proposed. Preston Manning knew that very well. He was by far one of the best leaders of the opp. ever. He didn't just oppose for the sake of it, he did his job as leader of the opp. by keeping the goverment in check, but he also lead his party with clear ideals of what SHOULD be as opposed to what should not be.

I never agreed with him, but I respected him a lot because he was a thinking politician.
