is second story still located in portland (http://www.secondstory.com)? i think it must be. like i said, you're going to get a few good big companies (w+k) in the portland AREA, but the way forward would be to look for slightly smaller places (à la 2ndstory) in town. there was a big exodus of great companies from the bay area to portland in the late 90s and it was a great place to ride out the beginning of the end. i wouldn't be surprised if the bottom were still out of the market, though.
