    ok, first:
    1. keep in mind that it's John Dvorak, who has predicted many things including the sure downfall of apple, which hasn't happened btw
    2. Apple wouldn't be using an x86 chip like a regular pc.. the chip would be the Itanium according to the article, since it's a 64 bit chip it would rival the already anticipated 64 bit chip coming to apple from IBM probably this summer. Why would they switch to Intel when IBM already has something for them? (even though it's taking forever).
    3. There will (almost guaranteed) no way that you will be able to build your own OS X box. That is one of apples strong points = things just work, and if you just throw together parts from tons of companies, chances are that it won't work quite like an Apple machine.
    4. This has been a rumor for years only because people want it, but apple won't do it. They make money on hardware, not software. That's why, even though their iLife apps are cool, they almost free.
