My favorite line in Closer, a brilliant brilliant movie, is when Clive Owen has to hear every position that his wife and her secret lover slept with each other in. He needs to know every specific intimate detail, and when he's questioned about his reasons, he screams," Because I'm a fuckin' caveman!" It's such an honest moment, a mentality many people share, yet few are willing to admit. No matter how far we've evolved, we're still stunted emotionally. We want what we can't have. Then we self-destruct.
Now, the bright side is, the mind is all powerful. You're in for some rocky moments ahead amigo--things won't get better every day--but if you can somehow flip this switch in your head, turn pain into beauty, despair into new kinds of truth, then you'll one day see that you're more human for having gone through it.
And even if this cliff notes existential is for the birds, at least it's something to believe in, and false illusions are often better short term than the cold hard naked truth. At least that's what i tell myself while crying in the shower each morning.
