well, it is just a first step toward self sustaining and reproducing robots.
right now robots are pretty useless since they rely completely on human control or support.
to build a robot that can not only repair itself and generate it's own power but produce copies of itself would make for a pretty good scout for space exploration...not too mention for wars and police action.
