I have a VAIO notebook which is good to work on and the screen looks very impressive. The text is antialiased - so web browsing looks very neat. However, only had it a year and the screen flickers from time to time - so beware. It's also very heavy and only last about an hour on the battery.
Just bought toshiba notebook (a new cheap one about £500) which is very nice and no problems so far. However the sony (accepting the above comments) is a better machine but then it was 3x the price.
IBMs are very robust and would be on my shortlist.
