man, I had the same problem with an apartment I lived in in Texas before.
There were building fire alarms in each unit that were the loudest, most shrill, disonant sound of all time. I was sleeping one night, door closed, a good 30 feet away from the thing, it went off and I thought I was going to have a heart attack. It didn't help that a strobe light flashed alongside it in my dark apartment.
What a cruel trick!
I ended up sleeping in my closet with ear plugs and pillows over my head because it went on for at least another hour, every 10 minutes.
