on top of Apple + Shift + 3 you can also Apple + Shift + 4 - you'll notice the pointer turns to a cross hair, now select the area you'd like to screen-grab
Also if you hold down the Control key during the process, it will instead creating a Picture x PDF file on desktop it get's copied into clipboard and ready to paste any app (with Apple + V)
