    you should never be shy about asking for compensation for your efforts invovled in making a site for anyone. obviously some poeple are hairlips about paying people to do things they assume they could just do themselves by downloading DW and taking a 1-800 course in web design. i wouldn't walk into a project assuming the worst though. if this person gets mad at you for suggesting that you get paid for building him a site you should explain to him exactly what it is that you do (cue scene from Casino re: Peci vs. bank manager).

    On another note: when you're just starting out in the game of interactive design and want to work up portfolio peices there's no harm in accepting very small amounts of compenstaion for large amounts of work, so long as you are benefiting by learning new skills that you wouldn't otherwise get a chance to learn. if he can't pay much and you want a tight portfolio piece (and you have time to work on it) make sure that the new site challenges you as a designer and developer. learn new Flash tricks or DHTML or grids or something that'll expand your skills as the competent new media thug that you obviously are.
