i see, illlustrator doesn't really like this but you can do it. use the default text tool. click on the edge of your circle (the icon will change to parentheses when you're on the line. You can now start typing but, unfortunately, you'll have to "return" as you approach the opposite side of the circle.
i hope this makes sense.
