  I normally ask for 40% UPFRONT for first time customers, then reduce to 25% next time they want me to do work for them.. Also I put a clause on the letter of agreement and the quotation that states that late payment will be penalised 1% of the total per week.. I also offer 1% discount for payments received within 7 days of onvoice date...

  Seems to work well for me.. no write-offs in 4 years..
