one of the problems, i find, is the fact that usually on the screen, your artwork is surrounded by a white background when working in illy or freehand. that results in your composition looking different than when you print it (layout, not folor).
try surrounding your artwork with neutral color like dark grey, then you'll get a better idea what it looks like after it's printed and cropped. still, there's no alternative to printing it, although with time, you will probably gain experience and be able to give better predictions.
