theres some subtle genius to the google logo and the little occassional variations, they lend a homely touch as opposed to the highly polished approach you people seem to want. by appearing to be somewhat 'homemade' the user is subconciously digesting that google is not some corporate monster and it's results can be trusted.
the eBay logo can also be thought of in this way. just my opinion but I'm surprised nobody else picked up on this.
