    Best thing to do would be to download demo's of After Effects, FCP, and Premiere.

    They all basically work the same but each has it's strenghts. I personally like After Effects and Premiere.

    Editing is straight forward once you learn the basics you should be able to put your footage together rather quickly. As a rule of thumb, capture and edit your video in the highest possible quality... you can downgrade by exporting in various codecs as you uses require (web,tv,dvd,etc.)

    If your question was more geared towards what goes into making a short film (talent direction, screenplay writing, consistancy of camera angle, etc.) then seach around online, you should find lots of helpful things.
