I've found it's always best to avoid installing system updates until a few weeks have passed. I'm still on 10.3.5 because I didn't want to deal with those delayed startup and active fan issues. I usually check this site for a couple of weeks before doing anything:

That way, you know both what you're getting into and how to work around any potential problems.
