Why are macs so expensive?

I went to university for three years, there i heard the back and fourth banter of MAC vs PC, and the whole time i held my tounge, and kept my mind open, while everyone else argued. This was quite a while ago but at the time the G4s were the top of the line and oputnumbered the PCs 20 to 1. My decision in the end... PC. They are more reliable, but more importantly more predictable, and far more open in their options of workflow. You pay more for industrial design (am i alone in thinking that they're ugly by the way?) and the OS is okay but its not superior to winblows, just as good if not a little behind when it gets down to a time efficiency issue... which is sad becasue apple made huge leaps in interface design along time ago, now they seem to be obsessed with pointless glossy effects that don't help them to be usuable above an entry level. Its great that they cater for the uneducated but once you understand the way the system works it becomes frustrating, because you know there is a better way, and that better way costs half the price.
