keep in mind, you can download brian's indexer and it does the same thing, not too mention it's xhtml compliant and you can change the css display.
all that, without arguing with your host about security and trying to get them to change the server settings.
it could be, depending on how they run the host box, that changing the httpd.conf file would affect every site they host...so i doubt they will do that.
pretty much, if you don't pay for a dedicated server, then it's not going to happen.

so, i would just use indexer. it's a fabulous little app.
and, if you want to take it further, on hotscripts.com they have uploader scripts with indexing...so you can upload files to it through a nifty little web panel...
