JMB has the photos hanging from the bottom of a baselines, but if you were putting a photo beside type, you would move it to the bassline above the one the type is sitting on so it squares up.
Since he uses the grid in a relatively ridgid way thats what he does, you could just use it for your type and then 'break out' with the images.
