by not having an "index" file there.
you can disable displaying the server directory in the apache config file, so your host may have that functionality turned off.
or, they may insert an index file automatically when the host is created...
i do believe it can bo overridden with an .htaccess file and some trickery, but i'm not sure on that one.

if you can get into the httpd.conf file on your server, then you can find where the code is.
