Let me start off by saying I am a professional photographer, and I have worked with most of the pro RAW processing software.
In order to answer your question, you got give me a little more info.
1. What kind of camera are you using?
2. The speed of the processing does take a while, because a RAW file holds all of the RAW data off your camera chip. What kind of computer setup you are running might effect the speed of your processing.
If you want to process a bunch of files, and you know it will take a long tme, just setup the parameters for those files that you are going to process, batch them, and come back later when they are done.Gt back to me on the camera you are using, and i'd be happy to make suggestions for software.
