  We (infusion project) launched a virtually unfinished site last year for May 1st and we were getting 1500 hits a day for weeks. You do get exposure from the design community. It looks like I might be launching my new site around that time so I went ahead and signed up for shits and giggles. I don't know if I'll even get mine done in time. I think its a good thing for the community although I think May1st is a little poorly organized..but its fun nonetheless.
