true story to follow:
i worked at a bar/restaurant/banquet facility/hotel all through college, it paid my way.
the place i worked at was 100+ years old. it was actually a mansion first, then the sons of the woman who owned it wanted to turn it into a hotel and bar way back in the day. it grew over the years.
well when i got hired on the bartender that hired me showed me the basement, which was straight out of the 40s. hadn't been touched. the gigantic furnace, furniture, storage of all the old stuff... and tunnels. back during prohibition this place was a rum runner. there were three tunnels that led underground throughout the town.
i went through two and they tied in with the sewers. some years ago they had put street signs below intersections so you knew where you were at. the last time i was in i stopped when i was 6 blocks away and i still couldn't see the end.
anyways. one night i'm in there after work by myself getting shitfaced. i was too drunk to drive so i passed out on the couch in the lobby. sometime in the morning i woke up to take a piss. real early. as i'm walking to the bathroom i notice a guy passed out at the bar surrounded by food and empty bottles. so i call the cops.
turns out the guy was a bum who had been sneaking into the place afterhours through the tunnels. for whatever reason he just drank himself stupid and passed out. he normally would wake up at 7 just before the cleaning crew arrived and leave unnoticed the way he came in.
it all made sense cause every morning when i would get there the cleaning crew would swear at me in spanish about the mess i made. then i'd fight with them that i cleaned everything before i left.
now i knew. the bum would come in, eat everything, drink everything and just leave it in the morning.
fucker. they then had some company come in and seal the tunnel entrances.
that's why i hate hobos to this day.
